TYPE C WATERPROOFING DRAINAGE How Does Aqua Channel Basement Drainage Work?

Aqua Channel is designed to collect and direct water entering a suitably designed basement cavity drain membrane system.

The channel is normally positioned around the internal floor perimeter at the wall/floor junction, a vulnerable point for below-ground water ingress.

Water moves behind the cavity drain membrane and enters the channel through its pre-drilled drainage openings.

The channel then provides a route towards an appropriate gravity-fed outlet or sump pumping arrangement.

The success of the system depends on correct design, adequate drainage capacity, proper installation and long-term maintenance.

Aqua Channel System Features
  • Rigid PVC drainage conduit
  • Pre-formed pentagonal profile
  • 19mm pre-drilled drainage holes
  • 70mm stated hole spacing
  • Normally positioned at wall/floor junction
  • Upstand for membrane detailing
  • Compatible modular fittings
  • Gravity or pumped drainage arrangements
  • Designed for suitable below-ground systems
PLAN YOUR DRAINAGE LAYOUT Which Aqua Channel Fittings Do You Need?

Select the correct components to create a continuous, accessible drainage route from collection points to the approved outlet.

01
Straight Channel Runs

Use the 2-metre Aqua Channel sections for suitable perimeter runs. Plan the channel length around the basement.

02
Channel Connectors

Use dedicated connectors to join adjacent channel lengths. Follow the approved fitting and jointing details.

03
Corner Pieces

Include compatible corner fittings where the drainage channel changes direction around the wall perimeter.

04
T-Piece Connections

Use T-pieces where a branch is required, including suitable cross-floor routes towards a sump chamber.

05
Outlet Connections

Provide an approved connection to the designed drainage destination. A gravity end outlet must match the intended discharge arrangement.

06
Inspection Access

Plan suitable jetting or inspection access points so the channel can be maintained over its service life.

BASEMENT WATER MANAGEMENT Aqua Channel & Cavity Drain Membrane Systems

Basement cavity drain waterproofing is commonly referred to as Type C drained protection.

Rather than relying only on preventing every drop of water from entering the structure, a correctly designed Type C system manages water behind the membrane and directs it to a safe discharge.

Aqua Channel can form part of this drainage path at the wall/floor junction.

Wall and floor membranes, correctly detailed junctions, perimeter channels and suitable drainage outlets must work together.

If gravity drainage is not available, a correctly sized sump pump system may be necessary.

A Complete System May Include:
  • Studded wall cavity drain membrane
  • Compatible basement floor membrane
  • Aqua Channel perimeter drainage
  • Channel connectors and corner fittings
  • End outlet or sump drainage connection
  • Suitable jetting or inspection access
  • Approved membrane jointing details
  • Automatic sump pumps where required
  • Scheduled maintenance arrangements
GENERAL INSTALLATION ADVICE Aqua Channel Installation Considerations

The channel layout should follow a suitable basement waterproofing design, not a generic one-size-fits-all plan.

01
Assess the Site

Investigate below-ground water conditions, the floor construction, water ingress routes and the intended basement use.

02
Plan the Drainage Route

Design channel positions, connections, drainage gradients where required, outlets and maintenance points.

03
Prepare the Junction

Prepare the wall/floor area according to the design, keeping the collection and drainage path free of debris.

04
Install the Channel

Position the Aqua Channel with its upstand and drainage openings correctly orientated to the waterproofing system.

05
Complete Connections

Fit compatible joints, corners, branches and outlet connections. Provide appropriate inspection and jetting access.

06
Test & Maintain

Verify the drainage route, pumping arrangements and any alarms before covering the system. Schedule ongoing inspection and cleaning.

Important Drainage & Waterproofing Note

Aqua Channel is a drainage component, not a complete waterproofing system by itself.

Below-ground waterproofing systems should be designed for site conditions in accordance with applicable guidance, including BS 8102 where relevant.

Outlets must be legally permitted and correctly connected. The Aqua Channel End Outlet must not be connected directly to foul drainage or a stack pipe, as the product guidance warns of odour entering the channel system.

Seek advice from a competent waterproofing designer where drainage is critical to protecting habitable accommodation.

AQUA CHANNEL HELP & ADVICE Aqua Channel Drainage FAQs

Common questions about basement perimeter drainage, fittings, outlets and maintenance.

What is Aqua Channel drainage?

Aqua Channel is a PVC drainage conduit designed to collect and direct water in suitable below-ground waterproofing systems.

Where is Aqua Channel installed?

It is normally installed around the internal floor perimeter at the junction between the wall and floor of a basement.

How much Aqua Channel is included in one pack?

The listed pack contains four 2-metre lengths, providing 8 linear metres of channel.

How much does the Aqua Channel pack cost?

The supplied 4 x 2m Aqua Channel pack is listed at £79.58.

What is Aqua Channel made from?

PAM Ties describes Aqua Channel as a pre-formed PVC drainage conduit with a pentagonal section and pre-drilled holes.

What size are the drainage holes?

The product description specifies 19mm holes positioned at 70mm intervals along the conduit.

What is the Aqua Channel Connector for?

The connector links two Aqua Channel conduit sections together to form a continuous run.

What is the Aqua Channel Corner Piece used for?

The corner piece allows suitable channel sections to change direction within a perimeter drainage layout.

Why would I need a T-Piece?

A T-piece enables a branch in the drainage route, such as a connection across the floor towards a suitable sump location.

What does an Aqua Channel End Outlet do?

It converts the pentagonal channel shape to a round discharge connection for a suitable gravity drainage arrangement.

Can the end outlet connect directly to foul drainage?

No. PAM Ties specifically advises against connecting the end outlet directly to foul drainage or a stack pipe, because odours can enter the drainage channel.

What is a Jetting Eye?

A jetting eye provides a planned access point for inspection, cleaning or flushing of a compatible drainage system.

Can Aqua Channel be used with cavity drain membrane?

Yes. It is designed for suitable cavity drain membrane systems where water is collected and directed towards a safe discharge point.

Does Aqua Channel need a sump pump?

Not always. Some systems can use suitable gravity drainage. Where gravity drainage is unavailable, a properly designed sump pump system may be required.

Is Aqua Channel waterproofing by itself?

No. Aqua Channel is a water collection and drainage component that should form part of a suitably designed complete waterproofing system.

Can Aqua Channel be used in cellar conversions?

Yes. Aqua Channel can be used in appropriately designed cellar or basement conversion waterproofing installations.

How often should Aqua Channel be cleaned?

Maintenance frequency depends on the system design, sediment conditions and servicing requirements. Follow the waterproofing designer's maintenance plan.

Why are inspection points important?

Drainage systems can accumulate deposits and debris over time. Suitable inspection and jetting access helps enable ongoing maintenance.
